Although there are debates as to whether Asians in the United States should be considered minority or not, my experiences are no different than being one. I’ve heard people say “you’re so smart” over and over, and often as an assumption not an observation. The stereotyping sometimes makes me worried- what if I’m not as smart as people think I am?
However, as I grew older, it became clear to me that letting these labels define me will only hold me back from achieving my goals and becoming better. If I want to learn and be proactive, I have to constantly ask questions about areas I’m limited in. Therefore I started disregarding what others might think of me, for example, courageously raising my hand in class to discuss a confusion. Nevertheless, as someone who still deeply cares about what people recognize me as, it’s still a challenge that needs continuous work.
These cases bring me to hope that one day society will be more educated about different ethnic groups and perceive everyone individually, not as a stereotyped group.
All The Same has given me an opportunity to share my stories and urge my community to foster equality, kindness, and care for everyone. I believe that through the hard work of everyone in the organization we will be able to accomplish our goals.
